Natural Remedies for Cold & Flu Season

Must-Haves for Your Medicine Chest

By Gardner Orton, Proprietor

People often ask me what to take when they come down with a cold or the flu. Having spent the past 18 years studying holistic health and natural medicine, I know a thing or two about using natural remedies to stay healthy. I’ll share my favorite and most reliable remedies and explain those that work best during the cold and flu season. But the interesting thing to note is that most people don’t act soon enough; they wait until they aren’t feeling well to fill their medicine chest, and this is not how natural remedies work.

You see, many of these time-tested herbs, superfoods, and homeopathic medicines work their best at the first signs of imbalance—not when you’re already down and out, coughing, sneezing, and bedridden with a fever. It takes a bit of preparation to be prepared—so to speak. Stocking your medicine chest at the beginning of the cold and flu season will ensure that when you start to feel off, you’ll have exactly what your body needs, when it needs it most.

So what should go in your medicine chest?

For the flu, and that all too familiar feeling that something just isn’t right—queasiness, chills, and fatigue—my hands-down favorite is Elderberry Syrup. This therapeutic elderberry syrup is made with vitamin-C-rich organic elderberries harvested in Maine. In my experience, nothing works better than elderberry to help relieve and ward-off flu symptoms.

And, our very own Super Elderberry Concentrate is an even better version of this time-tested remedy. To increase its effectiveness, we’ve taken 100% pure elderberry concentrate and fortified it with a nutrient- and antioxidant-rich blend that includes açaí, blueberry, black cherry, sea buckthorn, cranberry and red beet. Keep a bottle or two of this amazing tonic in your medicine chest; so the moment you feel off, it’s at the ready.

Oil of Oregano

For head colds, my all-time favorite is Oil of Oregano, not to be confused with the oregano we love on pizza!  Very few herbs can approach the healing powers of oil of oregano. Considered by many to be nature’s antibiotic, oil of oregano fights infection, boosts normal immune system function, improves digestion, and can even help with food poisoning. This is one remedy I always have with me, wherever I go. Take it at the first signs of imbalance and continue using it to relieve coughing fits, loosen mucous and phlegm, or to ease nausea, gas, acid reflux, and other stomach troubles. Our oil of oregano is crafted from wild Mediterranean oregano and is up to 4 times as powerful as most leading brands. Just five drops in an 8-ounce glass of water, 3 times a day, can provide effective relief.

Taking the time to properly stock your medicine chest now will ensure that you are ready for whatever may come your way in the future. This is what preventive medicine is really all about. As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  May you have a healthy and vibrant year ahead, prepared for whatever may come your way.

I just spent 2 hours on memory lane going through your online catalog. I used to order from your small paper catalog years ago. I don’t know what came over me to make me look you folks up but I had a great time. I plan on ordering a few things that I can’t find anywhere else soon. I am so glad you are still in business.
